Sounds depressing I know but then I am rather prone to some drama when it comes to describing my odd artistic output!

We all know that art is a fabulous way of expressing ourselves and in my case as someone who suffers from depression I like to use it to help me exorcise and express my demons.

The house that inspired is one of those very French buildings with shutters and windows that to me looked quite haphazard in design. It was down a side street in Béziers in Southern France. The height, absence of any life or light coming from the building despite seeing it in the daylight (and sunshine to boot) reminded me for some strange reason of an ominous London Victorian style town house down a side street. Somewhere a little bit sinister. Somewhere haunted by past misdeeds and nefarious goings on. Sherlock Holmes or Albert Finney’s 1970 film Scrooge came to mind. A film that I anticipated and watched every time it was shown with a mixture of joy and terror, replacing the Wizard of Oz (which evoked similar emotions!) as my favourite Christmas film.
The painting is on a reasonably large and cheap canvas from Lidl (one day I hope to be able to afford posh canvas). The blue is a Michael Harding Kings Deep Blue which I love and the building is mainly Williamsburg yellow and red iron oxide oil paints plus a fair bit of linseed oil. Tools include, hog brush to apply the paint, an old Disorder Boutique t-shirt to wipe back the layers and a craft knife for the cuts.
