Maximise your Midas

Another Brian Eno randomised oblique strategy card challenge between me and my mate Matt. This month it’s ..

‘Be Extravagant’.

My idea for the painting below that was vomited out from my brain and hands came from a mixture of stuff. I wanted to use what was left of the Sennelier iridescent pastels I’ve had sitting there for the last few years and I do love drawing and painting heads for some reason so knew I wanted to do one of those.

I was always told that subjects like landscapes are preferred visually speaking by the majority of people (no idea if thats true or not although it may have been said in the context of selling art).Trouble is whilst I love looking at landscapes Im a bit shit at painting them and anyway they don’t really float my boat in terms of subject matter, plus there are thousands of people out there doing it brilliantly already so why subject myself or others to my own dreadful compositions.

On a recent trip to France I’d observed a group of French men chatting and drinking coffee in a square in Besiers. One chap had a very interesting shaped head so I thought I’d use his head as inspiration.

The painting itself has a Unison pastel black and purple background with gold, silver, bronze and blue Sennelier oil pastels.

Matt came up with the name

“Melchior wonders about the veracity of claims of a virgin born divine being”
